Effective September 30, 2025, China launched its new Online Visa Application (COVA) system, now mandatory for visa submissions through Chinese consulates in the United States. The transition has introduced longer processing times—currently averaging 3–4 weeks—and possible delays as consulates adapt to the new digital workflow.
The process now includes a preliminary review phase before applicants can submit their passports, further contributing to the extended timelines. The COVA system is also being gradually implemented in other countries, with Chinese embassies worldwide expected to adopt it in the coming months.
GMP Recommendations
To minimize delays and ensure a smooth process:
- Apply early: Begin the process at least 5–7 weeks before the intended travel date.
- Ensure accuracy: Provide with complete and clear documentation.
- Keep travel plans flexible: Avoid non-refundable bookings until the visa is issued.
- Outside the U.S.:Confirm with your local consulate whether the COVA system is already in effect in your jurisdiction.
GMP will continue monitoring the COVA rollout globally and provide updates as further changes take effect.
